INTT 511 International Economics and World Trade (3+0+0)

A global perspective in international trade and development. The liberal
international economic order since World War II and new economy. The traditional
and contemporary theories of international trade. International trade
policies and welfare. Trade policies for developed countries and developing
countries. Exchange rate regimes and foreign exchange market. Risks in
international trade; commercial, political, currency risks and business
risks. Case studies presented by the participants covering individual
country experiences.

Examining regionalism from the perspective of economics and international
relations. International business environment, international economic
institutions, national and regional trade policies. Regional trading blocks
and globalization. Politics of global economic relations. Interdisciplinary
and comparative studies of the regions, with special emphasis on the current
economic, political and social issues.

Introduction to international political economy, ideologies and political
economy of international trade, the role of international organizations,
organizations and power, institutional change and economic performance,
transatlantic economic relations, regionalism versus international organizations,
regional economic integration and the European Union, the globalization
debate, interest groups and corporatism, Internet, inequalities of power
and wealth.

The emerging economies phenomenon; the structure and role of emerging
economies and Turkey's position. Challenges, constraints and opportunities
of emerging economies in the context of global economics. Global interdependence
in financial markets. Financial sector instability and crises; the roots
of crisis, crisis prediction, crisis prevention, crisis management and
the role of international financial institutions. Case studies presented
by the participants covering assessments of crises in different parts
of the world at different times.

Analysis of the competitiveness and economic development of Turkey from
a microeconomic perspective. The forces influencing competition in an
industry and the attributes determining industry development and national
competitive advantage within the framework of policies at the national
level as well as at the level of regions, clusters and groups of neighboring
countries. The study of strategic models for competitive advantage and
assessment of selected Turkish industries in mounting and sustaining a
competitiveness strategy.
INTT 521 Trade Operations and Supply Chain Management

Analysis of operations management principles with emphasis on design and
management of the trade operations system and the supply chain. Operations
strategy in a global environment; operations and productivity, process
strategy; capacity planning. The supply chain: strategies, network design,
demand forecasting, inventory management and risk pooling, logistics management,
coordination. Transportation models; decision-support models. Utilization
of computer games for application of the concepts presented.

international trade environment with a focus on overseas operations using
a simulation based software. Providing players with real-world experience
in managing strategic choices and engaging in negotiations. Experiencing
team-based decision making. Developing sound business judgment and analytical
thinking.

Competitive strategies in emerging, mature, declining, fragmented and
global industries. Cooperative strategies and their role in international
trade. Strategic decision in new business and foreign market entry. Strategy
implementation. Distributive and integrative negotiation strategies across
boundaries. Negotiation procedures, persuasion techniques, negotiating
styles; teams, coalitions, constituent, agent-principle relationships.
Ethics in management and negotiation. Study of the global management and
negotiation processes and strategies in selected regions with emphasis
on emerging markets.

Historical development of current and future issues in entrepreneurship
and trade. Creation of new business and/or entrepreneurial management
of existing business organizations possessing potential for exponential
growth; designing a value creation process, developing a business model
for commercializing the designed value bundle; formulating a strategy
to obtain venture capital/private equity financing to start up the venture
and presenting the fully developed formal business plan.

Basic principles of International Law. Institutional structure and fundamental
rules of International Economic Law; World Trade Organization/GATT - The
International Monetary Fund, its functions and operations; European Central
Bank and legal aspects of Euro. International rules and practices in international
commercial relations; international sale of goods, international transportation
and payment systems.

The economic, political and social analysis of EU enlargement; the EU
history, the EU institutions, the legal framework and European business
environment, the Single European Market and the European Economic and
Monetary Union (EMU); common EU policies and the EU-Turkey relations.

Strategic, political and philosophical issues faced by management and
governments involved in international trade; frameworks for developing
international marketing strategy; market assessment; sources and sustainability
of competitive advantage; international market structure analysis; market
entry strategy; implementation and coordination of international marketing
programs. Design of the international marketing program for a chosen product
and market in collaboration with other functional areas.

The roles of research projects, marketing information systems and decision
support systems in intelligence. Macro and micro marketing environment
as a source of intelligence. New forms of secondary research on market
trends and the competitive environment. Recent innovations in tracking
customer behavior. Major types of customer and competitor databases. Role
of intelligence in customer relationship marketing.

Driving forces behind development of international retail operations.
Strategies and direction of international retail operations. Determining
factors behind patterns of international retail development. Transfer
of retail innovation across national boundaries. Positioning retail operations
in new markets. Channel development within national and transnational
context. Study of the retailing activity and the retail market structure
in selected regions. Ethics in international retailing.

Concepts and tools required to use (as well as managerially develop or
improve) electronic information systems for creating competitive advantage
in trade with a focus on the strategic, managerial and operational issues.
Current state of e-trade; the Internet; new Internet technologies; B-to-B,
B-to-C, B-to-E opportunities; managing the supply chain on the Internet;
web-site analyses, regulatory and ethical issues, mobile e-trade, entrepreneurship
and other new trends.

Financial analysis, planning and control. Short-term and long-term financial
management. Capital budgeting techniques, projection of cash flows and
risks, cost of capital, capital structure and dividend policy. Derivative
securities; forward, futures, options and swaps. Pricing derivative securities.
Hedging positions in options and other derivative securities. Foreign
exchange risk management. Contemporary financing techniques in international
trade; factoring, leasing and forfeiting.

Developing an understanding of the diverse risks faced by international
managers. Usual risks such as property loss or damage, product liability,
general liability as well as international risks like investment risk,
employment risk, transportation risk and political risk. Identifying and
evaluating the risk management tools and their ranges such as insurance
and other financial and loss control techniques.
INTT 579 Graduate Seminar
The widening of students' perspectives and awareness of topics of interest
in international trade management through seminars offered by faculty,
guest speakers and graduate students.
