The Department of Tourism Administration aims to educate and train students for managerial positions in the field of tourism.

The department program offers professional courses which are complemented by courses in economics, finance, marketing, management, communication, behavioral sciences, food and beverage. An industrial training period of minimum 120 workdays during summer months is part of the study. Lectures and seminars conducted by leading practitioners are incorporated into the program to familiarize the students with the industry. Proficiency in a second language in addition to English is also an aim of the program.

Integration with the industry is attained by joint training projects that are of mutual benefit to students and the members of the tourism industry. The research projects assigned to the students during the course of the program are instrumental in developing a theoretical framework. Field studies expose students to the actual operational structure of the industry as well as giving them a chance to make contact with the employers of the service sector.

Tourism history and introductory principles as: Tourism in perspective; cultural tourism; sociology of tourism; tourism psychology and motivation as to the different features of the total tourism product. Total tourism product such as accommodation units, leisure and recreation facilities; transportation, travel, cultural activities, supporting services as insurance, banking etc. Planning, development and economics of tourism. Cases on tourism practices and philosophies as to past, present & future.

TRM 106 Anatolian Civilisations (Anadolu Uygarliklari) (3+0+0) 3
The importance of the Anatolian cultural heritage. Races and cultures that lievd in Anatolia. Paleolithic and neolithic eras in Anatolia. Chalcolithic culture and Bronze Age. Assyrian trading colony period and history of the Hittites and Phyrigians and the culture of Urartians. Ancient regions of Anatolia during Greek and Roman times. Istanbul through the ages. Museums and site visits are organized as field trips to complement the course.

Time sharing, resort and condominium management techniques. Operation of resort hotels and condominiums emphasized as resorts of various types, seasons and economic levels. TRM 253 Information Systems for Tourism Industry (3+0+0) 3

Evaluation and appraisal of organization systems currently in use and the development of new organization systems for the service industries with reference to information concepts, Hotel/Travel/Airline computer systems. HIS reservation models, reservation networks and HIS accounting; rooms management and general management modules.

Research design; hypothesis development; sampling; data collection methods; design of survey instrument; hypothesis testing: univariate and multivariate data analysis methods; experimental design; qualitative research methods and research report preparation. Students will be required to undertake a research project, including SPSS applications.

The role of economics in tourism development. Macroeconomics and microeconomics theory and applications from problems of community resource allocation, with particular attention to the problems of multiple use of community resources and to the conflicts between private and public goals.

A basic grounding in the fundamentals of hotel and restaurant management that effect legal rights and responsibilities. Emphasis is on recognition of issues and organization of solution in a logical manner with case studies.

A survey of concepts and theories seeking to understand and explain individual and group behavior in organizations. Information about the concepts of interpersonal communication and understanding of "self" and interpersonal communication skills. Transactional analysis, basic guest (customer) relations, listening skills, verbal communication, paralanguage, kinesics and proxemics, leadership in gorup communication and communication in group process. Management of the marketing function with special emphasis on the requirements of service organization, application of marketing concepts, methods and techniques in the service industries, uses and limitation of various promotional forces such as advertising, field selling, merchandising and sales promotion in the service industries. A general view of quality, dimensions of service quality, diagnosing service quality failures, measurement of customer satisfaction with services, cost of quality, planning for and managing service quality.

TRM 366 Investment Management (Yatirim Yonetimi) (3+0+0) 3
Introduction to basic capital budgeting and investment appraisal techniques. Basic components of a complete feasibility study: Business concept development, assessment of industry trends, preparation of marketing plan, prepration of management and organization plans, financial statement projections, cash flow statements, application of investment appraisal criteria, sensivity analysis, preparation and presentation of feasibility report. Application of the investment appraisal model to tourism investment projects.

Personal sales, advertising, public relations and sale promotions in connection with the services industry. Use of globally accredited cases to demonstrate theoretical principles. Application of concepts to real market conditions through class projects.

Scientific study of food regarding its chemical nature, physical properties and nutritional composition. Nutrition as the study of food and its utilizaiton by the body. Nutrients, basic physiology, enzymes and digestion, food and energy. Food poisoning, food preservation, food additives and labelling.

The use of information technology and CRS (computerized reservation systems) in tourism. Travel information manual; geographic travel regions; timetables and schedules; ticket reservation changes; fare quotations, passenger files. Hotel and rent a car availabilities, bookings and sales.

TRM 375 Food Services Management (Yiyecek Hizmetleri Yonetimi) (2+0+2) 3
Explanation and analysis of the internal workings of a food service management in business, industry and health related facilities. Presentation and analysis of food service organization structures, job descriptions, internal controls, internal system design, specialty food service equipment considerations. Analysis of the factors in the context of areas such as hotels, airline catering, other transport catering, educational institutions and contract food service management. Field visits to above mentioned types of operations. Preparation of term papers on different types of operations.

Factors affecting purchase-related consumer decisions. Personal and external factors that have impact upon the consumer decision making process, attitude formation and attitude change, communication, adoptation of innovations and brand loyalty. Various views on the individual in the marketplace, and models of consumer decision making with a heavy emphasis on services. Important topics will include analyzing the external environment, identifying and selecting a strategic competitive advantagte, portfolio analysis and formal planning systems. Safety and security measures and its operational procedures in air travel, cruise ships, hotels. Safety hazards, fire safety, food-borne illnesses and infection and infection diseases, medical emergencies and terrorism and the necesssary insurance selection policies as to the above hazards.

Inrternet as a commercial medium and its use in the tourism industry. Main areas to be covered (major topics) will include the development of the internet, social and the marketing changes brought by its utilization of the world wide web for communications, promotion, advertising and distribution.
Prerequisite: TRM 263 or consent of instructor.

TRM 492 Tourism Research Topics (Turizmde Ozel Arastirmalar) (1+0+4) 3
Master term project preparation in a field of interest as:
Tourism policy, destination marketing, culture tourism, travel agency operations, consumer preferences in tourism; cross-cultural non-verbal communication in tourism and other similar related topics.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

Summer Training (Yaz Staji)
The internship provides students with the oppurtunity to work within a company environment for a total of 120 workdays.
