In a scientific and technological age, everyone should be exposed to some degree to the theories, laws, applications and potentials of chemistry. The department provides students with a knowledge and understanding of the composition, structure, properties, and transformations of natural and man-made substances. Introductory courses in the department provide a broad overview of the science of chemistry for non-science and non-chemistry majors. Intermediate and advanced courses provide a solid foundation for those who wish to pursue graduate work in chemistry or for those who choose chemistry-related careers in industry, government and education. Qualifications for a career in teaching high school chemistry may be earned by enrolling in supplementary credits in education methodology. All courses are supplemented by laboratory classes in which the students become skilled in "wet" chemistry, and at the same time become acquainted with the advanced instrumental techniques.

To fulfill the requirements for a Bachelor in Science degree in Chemistry, students must take 80 credit hours of chemistry, 16 credit hours of mathematics, 12 credit hours of physics, 6 credit hours of complementary electives (science and engineering), 29 credits of social science electives (including two courses in economics, and the requisite number of courses in Turkish language and in the History of the Turkish Republic), and a computer elective. The total number of credit hours required for the Bachelors of Science degree in chemistry is 143. Students must also complete a minimum of 60 workdays of on the job training in a chemistry related-facility.

There are double-major programs with the Departments of Physics, Chemical Engineering and Molecular Biology and Genetics.
