CAMPUSES THE SOUTH CAMPUS The Bogazici University Cultural Center (Albert Long Hall) houses two lecture rooms and an assembly hall with a seating capacity of 479 and is regularly used for conferences, concerts, and public meetings. The Gymnasium and Social Hall (Henrietta Washburn Hall), which also houses a theater, is the center of student athletic and extracurricular activities. The Engineering Building (Perkins Hall) is a four-storey building housing the office of the Dean and the Civil, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering departments. The Administration Building (Gates Hall) houses the Registrar's Office,
Summer Term Office, Student Affairs Office, Financial Aid Office, Post
Office and Business Office. The Arts and Sciences Building (Anderson Hall) was built in 1913. It houses the office of the Dean and the departments of History, Mathematics, Philosophy and Western Languages and Literatures. The English Preparatory Building houses the School of Foreign Languages and the department of Translation and Interpretation. The Alexander Van Millingen Hall (1932) houses offices for the Rector, Vice-Rectors, Dean of Student Affairs, Secretary General, plus Personnel, Research and Planning Offices, and International Relations Office. Natuk Birkan building, opened in 2004, houses Ýbrahim Bodur Auditorium, Turhan Esener Hall, lecture rooms, and departments of Economics and Turkish Language and Literature. Hülya Bozkurt Art Studio takes in two painting studios, a dark room, and a movie assembly room. Painting, Applied Arts and Photography lectures are taught in these studios. Furthermore, the ceramics studio is present under the ground floor of the Infirmary. Mithat Alam Film Center has storage room for an archive which currently consists of 3,400 films on video, a movie theater which seats 61 people, a small TV room, two interconnected spacious rooms serving as a studio which currently holds one analogue linear editing set, and a reference library on Turkish and world cinema which is in the process of being completed. The South Campus also boasts one men's and one women's residence hall (Hamlin and Theodorus Hall respectively) and a number of service facilities such as the Computer Center, the Infirmary, a faculty center (Kennedy Lodge) as well as the University Cultural Heritage Museum. The old Carpentry Building houses the Institute of Social Sciences. THE NORTH CAMPUS The Abdullah Kuran Library is host to the university central library collections. The Science and Engineering Building houses laboratories, seminar rooms, and offices for the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Chemical and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Civil and Mechanical Engineering laboratories are also located in this building. The Faculty of Education Building has classrooms of various sizes, as well as offices for the Dean and the departments of Computer Education and Education Technology, Educational Sciences, Foreign Language Education and Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education. The Education Technology Building Block-A houses the offices, classrooms and laboratories of the Computer Engineering Department as well as the University Press. Block-B of the same building is housing the Department of Primary Education, a multi-purpose auditorium (Turgut Noyan Auditorium), and PC labs of the Computer Center. North Park Building houses Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and Turkish Language Courses Coordination Unit. The building also takes in Social Policies Forum, TÜSÝAD Foreign Policies Forum, Distance Education Center, Blind People Technology Education Center (GÖTEM), a cafeteria, and a two-storey car park on the basement floor. Center of Technology Building (TEKMER) offers 13 units of 25 workshops in an 860-m² building of 3 storey to entrepreneurs. TEKMER began to work after a signed protocol between Bogazici University and KOSGEB in 1996 and started its activities in 1997. The North Campus also contains two large residence halls for men and women, the main student cafeteria, a bookstore, a laundry, and additional offices and classrooms for the School of Foreign Languages. THE UÇAKSAVAR CAMPUS The Uçaksavar Campus features a housing complex for faculty and staff, an ultramodern student dormitory (the "Superdorm") and a large athletic complex including a stadium and a fully equipped gymnasium. The Life Long Learning Center is also located in this campus. Established on a 3000 square meter-area, Garanti Culture Center is recently opened (2004) to offer a conference hall (Ayhan Þahenk Hall) which seats 500 people, multipurpose seminar rooms, a foyer area, a dance performance studio, and a closed parking lot. The Hisar Campus is a complex overlooking the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge spanning the Bosphorus. The Building houses the office of Director of the School of Applied Disciplines and departments of International Trade, Management Information Systems and Tourism Administration, the Institute of Environmental Sciences, and their laboratories are housed in this building. The Building complex, covering an area of 1924 square meters, consists of five blocks housing also classrooms, three amphitheaters, and a cafeteria. THE KANDILLI CAMPUS The Kandilli Observatory was founded in 1868 in Tünel, a district of Ýstanbul, and was then called the Imperial Observatory. In 1890, it was moved to its present location. As a result of fast development and diligent work, the observatory has grown into a scientific complex of 37 buildings. Its research in the fields of solar physics and seismology has drawn the attention and gained the approval of major scientific institutions throughout the world; it now plays a crucial role in international projects. As the result of a law passed in 1982, the Kandilli Observatory became part of Bogazici University. The Kandilli Observatory and Institute of Earthquake Research was then founded in order to realize a Master's program in the field. The observatory has been transformed into the Center for the Research and Application of Aerial and Terrestrial Sciences. The Center is made up of two sections, the Terrestrial Sciences Service and the Aerial Sciences Service. The Terrestrial Sciences Service is comprised of the seismology, geo-magnetism and meteorology laboratories. The Aerial Sciences Service has two laboratories for solar physics and optics. The Center has also formed a network of earthquake stations throughout the country; those in the Marmara region are radiolink stations. The Kandilli Observatory and Institute of Earthquake Research maintains constant contact with all stations and strives to spread the network to even the remotest corners of Anatolia. THE SARITEPE CAMPUS The Saritepe Campus lies with its 300 acres to the west of Kilyos, a former fishermen's town - now a popular touristic resort during the summer - on the Black Sea coast, 35 km from Istanbul. Having been added to the Bogazici University property in 1985,
the campus now features the following facilities: The other building, Block B, contains offices and classrooms of the Sarýtepe Branch of the Foreign Languages School English Preparatory Unit, the Visual Activities Room, the Music Chamber and the Dining Hall. Coastal Engineering laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department is housed on the ground floor of Block B. The Residence Building provides housing mainly for the academic and administrative personnel working on the campus. The Boarding Facility overlooking the beach serves the academic and administrative staff and the graduates of the University as a place of recreation throughout the summer season, with its restaurant and rooms for accommodation. One of Istanbul's most popular beaches, the Burcbeach, is also on the campus territory. STAFF AND STUDENT NUMBERS During the 2002-03 academic year, 8076 undergraduate and 1926 graduate students were enrolled in the various faculties of the University. During the same period, 637 full time and 195 part time faculty, as well as 389 research and teaching assistants, were employed by the University. CAMPUS RESOURCE CENTERS AND SERVICES THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Robert College, founded by Dr. Cyrus Hamlin in 1863, housed the predecessor of Bogazici University Library with an initial collection of 200 law books donated by the Harvard Law School. The present building, completed in 1982 and named in 1999 for Prof. Aptullah Kuran, the founding Rector of Bogazici University, currently holds about 450.000 volumes in English, Turkish, French, German and other languages. The Near East Collection is the richest collection of Near East materials in Western languages in the World, with special emphasis on the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire and its adjacent regions. The Rare Books Division contains early printed books and manuscripts. The Reference Department provides materials needed for research, supplies
information of all kinds on all topics, and deals with general reference
inquiries and provides interlibrary loan services. Assigned readings for specific courses are placed on reserve at the request of faculty members. Lists of reserve books and articles are kept at the circulation desk of the Reserve Book Room. The Library receives 1420 current print periodicals, more than 9000 full text electronic journals and keeps major international abstracts and indexes to periodic literature. Microfilm files of The Times, The New York Times, Cumhuriyet and Milliyet are also maintained. The Library also has a Braille collection featuring reference books, textbooks, novels and periodicals. The services of the Library are available to the faculty, students and administrative staff, as well as to users from other national and international research institutions. THE COMPUTER CENTER Hardware Resources: Bogazici University Advanced Technologies Research and Development Center is a service unit which is affiliated with the B.U Rectorate. With its the state-of-the-art high-tech equipments which can be used in surface analysis, micro analysis and detailed characterization, Bogazici University Advanced Technologies Research and Development Center services not only the research groups and researchers working in Bogazici University but to industrial institutions and the researchers and research groups who are members of other universities as well. The Center's open structure allows it to collaborate with and to support or participate in scientific /technological projects carried out by other laboratories it is related with. The center has a 400 MHz BB NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectrometer, an ESEM-STEM-FEG&EDAX/IPS (Field Emission Gun-Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis System) with 2 nm resolution that allows samples to be analyzed and studied in their natural environment and XRD device which has Multi Purpose and High Temperature attachments that allow high temperature/stress/strain and pole figure analyses. THE LIFE-LONG LEARNING CENTER An important area of educational activity at Bogazici University is life-long learning. In industrial societies facing rapid technological development and change, the retraining and bringing up to date of the work force is thought to be a primary function of universities. Led by the newly established Life-Long Learning Center, Bogazici University offers courses and seminars in a variety of subjects for public and private sector employees, to enable them to keep abreast of developments in their fields and to acquire new skills. Currently, continuing education courses in information technology, business management, tourism administration, industrial administration, environmental management and various languages are being offered. It is expected that the number and variety of such courses will increase dramatically in the near future. Continuing education courses vary from 30 to 400 instruction hours in length and culminate with certificates of different types. Full details of these courses are usually advertised in the local press. THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS The aim of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs at Bogazici
University is to enhance the quality of all aspects of student life on
campus. To that end, this office coordinates the activities of several
academic and administrative offices related to students; processes student
applications concerning academic, social, administrative issues; endeavours
to improve the quality of student services (e.g., residences, transportation,

This student service center, affiliated with the University's Rectorate, was established on November 17, 1993. It has a director, a full time counseling psychologist, two full time clinical psychologists and one administrative assistant. This staff offers developmental, preventive and remedial service all year round, every week day between 9:00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. The aim of the Center is to help students actualize and enrich their social, emotional and vocational potential as well as to help them develop their coping skills for dealing with daily stresses and problems. The three working principles of the Center are privacy-confidentiality, security, and respect for individual rights. The Center tries to achieve its aim through three major programs: Orientation (a two day program for new students, held every September), Guidance (educational and developmental group work), and Psychological Counseling (group and individual counseling to help relieve tension and develop coping skills). The Center perceives the academic departments and dormitories as the two main sources of cooperation in reaching and helping students. OFFICE OF STUDENT RESIDENCES Bogazici University has 7 student dormitories, housing a total of 2,700 students. Most dormitories are exclusively for undergraduate students who reside outside Istanbul. One of the dorms, Superdorm, houses both undergraduate and graduate students. OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS The International Relations Office provides assistance to participants of Exchange Programs ( Overseas and Socrates- Erasmus Program) and to Special Student program*. It assists all incoming and outgoing students with the application process as well offer registration advice. The office also organizes orientations and act as the contact point for all questions related to visa matters and government regulations. For more information about these programs and application procedures: www.intl.boun.edu.tr *Special Student Program is for students from universities which are not exchange partners of Bogazici University but wish to attend Bogazici University for one or two semesters. Those who have already graduated can also apply to this program. The Financial Aid office coordinates merit-based and need-based financial support for students. Merit-based awards and financial aid are given each year to students on the basis of their university entrance exam scores and ranking. Applications for need-based financial aid are accepted at the beginning of each academic year, and the financial aid may include one or more of the following: monthly allowance, food program, free housing, textbook allowance, summer school tuition assistance and foreign student aid. THE STUDENT AFFAIRS COORDINATION COUNCIL The Student Affairs Coordination Council is the overseeing office for all student activities. All club activities are conducted under the guidance of the Parliament of Clubs, and any of the social activities involving the student body go through the Student Affairs Coordination Council. For more information about the council: www.intl.boun.edu.tr STUDENT CLUBS AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Within the University, student life is rich and varied with activities to cater to almost all talents and interests. The University has a tradition of encouraging extra-curricular activities that are consistent with the educational objectives of the institution and in line with the interests of students. All students are encouraged to take part in these activities. Student activities are organized by various Student Clubs. Currently active organizations are indicated below. -Aviation Club THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE The goal of the Public Relations Office is to communicate effectively and regularly with Bogazici University's constituencies including prospective students, the parents of prospective students, current students, the parents of current students, alumni, faculty, staff and the general public. The Public Relations Office informs the campus community and public at large of University activities and events. This office also manages the content and production of the commencement program, as well as publications and guides related to the University. They also support the conference organizations of academic departments and classical music concerts which have been performed for five years. The Public Relations Office compiles, edits and publishes news from Bogazici (Bogazici'nden Haberler), a newsletter. THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Alumni Association (BÜMED) is an organization composed primarily of Bogazici University and pre-1971 Robert College graduates. It seeks to support the University and to represent the views of graduates within the University community. THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE The Registrar's Office is responsible for the registration of students and the provision of necessary information to applicants at the beginning of each term. In addition to the Registrar's Office, students can consult their advisors for information concerning university regulations. HEALTH CARE SERVICE The Health Care Service provides both preventive care and medical treatment to all students. Health Care Service is provided in the infirmary on campus. Patients are treated either in the infirmary or referred to a hospital. Medical treatment is free. The infirmary provides 24-hour service. SPORTS FACILITIES The University provides a comprehensive sports program in addition to
the extra - curricular activities listed above. A sports complex including
a soccer and track field and a gymnasium with extensive training equipment
exists on the Uçaksavar Campus. Located on the South Campus, an
outdoor swimming pool is open to all students. Sports such as aerobics,
aikido, football, track and field, badminton, basketball, cycling, fencing,
soccer, handball, gymnastics, skiing, rowing, table tennis, tennis, taekwan-do,
triathlon, volleyball, sailing and skiing are extremely popular.
